Festival da Canção 2024 marks a significant milestone, celebrating 60 years since Portugal’s inaugural participation in Eurovision. Originally named “Grande Prémio TV da Canção Portuguesa,” the festival underwent various alterations in nomenclature and format before adopting the title Festival da Canção in 1979.

Portugal’s participation in Eurovision on Swedish terrain holds particular significance, marking the first time since 1992. RTP faced relegation from the contest in 2000 and opted out of competing in the 2013 and 2016 editions, all of which were hosted in Sweden.

Noteworthy is the previous representation of Portugal in Liverpool by Mimicat with the entry “Ai coração.” Her performance culminated in a 23rd position in the final, securing a total of 59 points.
