EU Unhappy with Eurovision Flag Ban: “A Gift to the Enemies of Europe”?

The European Commission is blasting the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) decision to ban EU flags at the Eurovision Song Contest final.

Vice President Margaritis Schinas called the move “mind-blowing” and a gift to “the enemies of Europe.” Schinas criticized the EBU’s decision to exclude flags other than those of participating countries, arguing the timing was insensitive with the European elections approaching. He also highlighted the ongoing pro-democracy protests in Georgia, suggesting the EU flag’s absence sent the wrong message.

A spokesperson for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed Schinas’ criticism, calling the ban “regrettable.” They pointed out that the EU flag represents both member states and other Council of Europe members participating in the contest.

Schinas couldn’t understand the EBU’s reasoning. He questioned who benefits from the ban so close to the European elections, suggesting it only helps Euroskeptics. While the EBU claims this year’s flag policy is the same as 2023, allowing only participating countries’ flags and rainbow flags, video evidence contradicts this.

Schinas plans to meet with EBU management to seek clarification. This year’s Eurovision in Malmö, Sweden, was already contentious due to ongoing conflicts. Protests erupted before the final, with many participants waving Palestinian flags. The unexpected flag ban adds another layer of controversy to a turbulent Eurovision 2024.
