The Eurovision Song Contest is coming to Switzerland! After Nemo’s triumphant win with “The Code” in 2024, the nation is abuzz with excitement. But where exactly will the competition take place? Buckle up, Eurovision fans, because four Swiss cities are bidding in a fierce battle to host the 2025 spectacle.
Leading the charge is Basel, a cultural and economic powerhouse. This western city has two potential venues in its arsenal: the St-Jakobshalle, a cozy 12,000-seater arena, and the ambitious St. Jakob-Park, a massive 40,000-capacity football stadium. However, the lack of a permanent roof at the stadium necessitates a “temporary ceiling reinforcement” – a fascinating, if slightly precarious, engineering feat.
Bern, the nation’s charming capital, isn’t sitting this one out. While initial reports cast doubt on their participation, Bern is now expected to join forces with Biel/Bienne, the hometown of Eurovision champion Nemo. The Bern Festhalle is a potential contender, while Biel/Bienne’s Tissot Arena could host auxiliary events. Interestingly, a brand new 9,000-seat arena on the Bernexpo site might even be built specifically for Eurovision!
Geneva, home to the Eurovision Song Contest’s organizer, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), throws its hat into the ring with a clear advantage. Not only does it boast an international airport and easy access from France, but the city government is actively campaigning with a dedicated taskforce. The grandiose Palexpo, with a capacity of 15,000, stands ready to welcome the Eurovision faithful.
Finally, Zurich, Switzerland’s economic and cultural hub, joins the fray. This cosmopolitan city offers excellent public transport connections and an international airport, making it a convenient travel destination. Zurich boasts two potential venues: the historic 15,000-seat Hallenstadion and the brand-new Swiss Life Arena, with a capacity of 12,000. Additionally, Zurich’s reputation as Switzerland’s LGBTQ+ hotspot could give its bid a significant edge.
The competition promises to be fierce. Each city offers unique advantages and a distinct flavor. With all four contenders bidding with the necessary infrastructure, predicting the winner is a near-impossible feat. One thing’s for sure, Eurovision fans are in for a treat! The final decision on the host city will be announced in August, so stay tuned for the grand reveal!
