Eurovision Strengthens Its Future: EBU Announces Key Development Areas

The Eurovision Song Contest, a global phenomenon reaching over 160 million viewers in 2024, is taking proactive steps to ensure its continued success. Following an independent review of the 2024 event, the European Broadcasting Union has outlined three key areas for development: EBU Governance and Participation, Safety and Risk Management, and Audience Engagement, Fans and Media.

This initiative emphasizes the EBU’s commitment to strengthening the contest for future generations. It comes just six weeks after the Malmö-hosted 2024 edition, demonstrating a swift response to ensure the beloved competition remains a beacon of unity and entertainment.

Streamlining Leadership and Governance

Recognizing the event’s expanding scale, the EBU has established a new ESC Director position. This role will report directly to the EBU Deputy Director General and Media Director, providing focused leadership and operational oversight. Additionally, the responsibilities of the Executive Supervisor will be streamlined to concentrate on production, artist and broadcaster relations, and daily production matters. A new Head of ESC Brand and Commercial will further support the leadership team.

A Focus on Stakeholders

The EBU Governance and Participation area aims to clarify decision-making processes for participant selection. This will involve ensuring a wider range of member broadcaster voices are heard, while also defining the roles and responsibilities of governing bodies, the core ESC team, Heads of Delegations, and participating artists.

Enhanced Safety and Accessibility

Safety and Risk Management will be a key focus. This includes improving comprehension of the contest rules for all involved, with a specific emphasis on simplification and accessibility for artists. Additionally, existing crisis management protocols will be strengthened, and security and cybersecurity measures will be bolstered to meet the growing needs of a global event.

Engaging a Broader Audience

The EBU recognizes the importance of audience engagement. The third area of development, Ensuring a General-Audience Show and Broad Engagement, will see increased collaboration with fan groups, influencers, and media outlets. This collaboration aims to foster broader engagement that reflects the core values of the contest. Furthermore, it ensures the contest remains an all-encompassing prime-time event, appealing to viewers of all ages.

The Eurovision Song Contest’s enduring appeal is undeniable. By addressing these key areas of development, the EBU is laying the groundwork for a future filled with captivating performances, passionate fandom, and international unity.
