Iceland to Participate in Eurovision 2025 Despite Controversy

Iceland has confirmed its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, which will be held in Basel, Switzerland. The decision comes after a period of uncertainty following a highly controversial 2024 contest.

The Icelandic National Broadcaster, RÚV, announced the news today, citing the event’s significant cultural impact and popularity among Icelanders. “The decision to participate is primarily based on the fact that this is an event with great value in Icelandic society,” said a statement from RÚV. “It is a source of joy and happiness for a large part of the nation and a valuable opportunity for families to come together.”

The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest was marked by significant controversy, particularly surrounding Israel’s participation and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The event faced widespread protests and calls for a boycott, leading to a noticeable decline in viewership.

Despite these challenges, Iceland has decided to continue its involvement in the contest, acknowledging its importance to the Icelandic music industry. “Eurovision and the Icelandic Song Contest have produced countless Icelandic musical gems and laid the foundation for the brilliant careers of many musicians,” RÚV stated.

Format Changes Under Consideration
The European Broadcasting Union has announced plans for significant reforms to the Eurovision Song Contest in response to the 2024 controversy and a desire to strengthen the contest’s future. Nine working groups are currently examining ways to enhance the event’s apolitical nature, make it more family-friendly, and ensure its long-term sustainability.

RÚV has expressed its support for these reforms, noting that the broadcaster has provided feedback to the EBU regarding the negative discourse surrounding the 2024 contest.

Icelandic Selection Process
While Iceland’s participation in Eurovision 2025 is confirmed, the selection process for the Icelandic entry has yet to be finalized. In recent years, the winner of the Icelandic Song Contest has represented Iceland at Eurovision. However, RÚV has indicated that this format may be subject to change.

A decision on the selection process is expected in the coming weeks.
