The Canton of Basel Stadt has announced an upcoming referendum for residents to vote on whether the city should financially support the hosting of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. This decision comes after the Swiss Federal Democratic Union presented over 2,000 signatures calling for the public to weigh in on the city’s contribution to the event. Of the 4,203 signatures collected, 3,912 were validated, reaching the threshold needed to trigger the referendum.
The referendum stems from the EDU’s concerns regarding Eurovision, with the socially conservative party stating that the contest promotes views they do not support. Should Basel’s residents vote against the city’s financial involvement, the scale of Eurovision-related events may be impacted, especially in terms of cultural activities, city branding, and promotional efforts. However, a “No” vote would not strip Basel of its role as host, allowing the Eurovision Song Contest to proceed in Switzerland as planned.
Both the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SSR SRG) and Basel city officials have highlighted the potential economic and cultural benefits of hosting Eurovision. They believe the contest will boost Basel’s visibility on the international stage, attract tourists, and contribute positively to the local economy. The referendum decision, however, could influence the extent of the city’s involvement in supplementary events and local programming, aspects that many believe add vibrancy to the contest and Basel’s representation.
